What to Expect at Your First Volleyball Tournament: A Guide for Parents

Congratulations! Your athlete is about to participate in their first volleyball tournament. This is an exciting milestone, and as a parent, you play a crucial role in supporting your volleyball athlete. Here's a guide to help you navigate the day and make the most of this experience.

1. Early Start

Tournaments often start early in the morning, so be prepared for an early wake-up call. Ensure your athlete gets a good night's sleep and has a high protein breakfast to fuel their energy for the day ahead. If they are not a huge “breakfast” kid, protein smoothies are a great option.

2. Pack Essentials

Make a checklist of essentials to bring:

  • Uniform and Gear: Ensure your athlete has their complete uniform (all of them, just in case!) , knee pads, socks, and volleyball shoes.

  • Snacks and Hydration: Pack healthy snacks and plenty of water to keep your child energized and hydrated throughout the day.

  • Comfort Items: Bring a comfortable chair, blanket, or cushion for yourself, as seating can be limited and hard.

  • Entertainment: Tournaments can have long waiting periods between matches, so bring books, games, or other activities to keep your child occupied (especially if you have other kids or family/friends attending the tournament).

3. Arrive Early

Arrive at the venue early to find parking, locate your team's meeting spot, and allow your child to warm up with their team. This also gives you time to familiarize yourself with the facility and find the best viewing spots.

4. Understand the Schedule

Tournaments typically have a pool play format followed by bracket play. Pool play consists of multiple matches against different teams, and the results determine the seeding for bracket play. Matches can be back-to-back or have breaks in between, so be prepared for a full day of volleyball action. This also varies by age, division, state, type of tournament, etc.

5. Support and Encourage

Cheer for your child and the entire team but remember to keep your support positive and encouraging. Avoid criticizing players, coaches, or referees. Your positive attitude can greatly influence your child's experience and confidence. Always show them you support them whether they play a lot or not. Stay positive and teach them that whatever their experience, there is opportunity to learn.

6. Stay Informed

Stay in touch with your child's coach and team manager/team mom for updates on match times, locations, and any changes to the schedule. Many tournaments use apps or websites to provide real-time updates, so make sure you're connected.

7. Be Patient

Tournaments can be long and sometimes unpredictable. Matches may run late, and there can be delays. Patience is key, and keeping a flexible mindset will help you and your child enjoy the day.

8. Celebrate Effort and Growth

Regardless of the outcome, celebrate the team’s effort and growth. Tournaments are a great opportunity for learning and development, both on and off the court. Encourage your child to reflect on their performance and set goals for future improvement.

9. Capture Memories

Don't forget to take photos and videos to capture the memories of this special day. These moments will be cherished by you and your child for years to come.

10. Have Fun!

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience. Volleyball tournaments are a fantastic way to bond with your child, meet other parents, and be part of a supportive community.
